I’m often asked how I create my characters. At last count I have somewhat in the neighborhood of seventy-five to eighty relatively strong characters. By strong, I mean these characters actually have back stories and personalities that come across on the page. Some are absolutely terrifying, like Cody Larson in FROSTPROOF and Tommy Fielding in DEGENERATES. Some are adventurous, like Tim Madison in SILENT INVASION, and Jamie Richards in DREAM TRAVELER, and some are tragic, yet beautiful, like…

On the Soul of a Vampire by Krisi Keley was not at all what I expected. It is a deeply emotional and introspective look at one ‘man’s’ search for meaning in life. (Or in this case, one ‘vampire’.) Written primarily in first person from the point of view of Valery Castellene, a vampire of some 800 years, we see and feel his inner pain as he struggles with his existence. Convinced that he is evil incarnate, yet still subconsciously wishing to be good, Valery’s emotional conflict is the…

Almost a year ago, I was handed an assignment. That’s how it felt, Trestle Press enjoyed my novel Daniel’s Lot and its exploration of Christian themes. They asked me if I would start a religious series for them. As authors do, I wanted to experiment. I wanted to talk about what religion meant to me. I felt too confined. Everybody has a different…

Whether an author loves or dreads them, whether you consider them the best part of the job or the worst part, the fact of the matter is that author interviews are part of the job. And it’s important to make the most of every opportunity.
Today I was interviewed for The Examiner which boasts 20 million readers a month. Definitely an opportunity I didn’t want to blow. So what’s the most important thing to say at a moment like this? No matter how much we want to shout, "Buy my book! Buy…

I wanted a reminder of where it started. In celebration of the upcoming release of The Secret Queen, may I present –
From The Beginning (Sept 3, 2010)
I sat down with the purpose of writing a story for my children.
Thus, Empyrean was born.
(Kinda made that last sentence sound epic. Sheesh, writers can be self-important sometimes.)
Actually,…

I just received the illustrations for book two, " Ashley the Magical Butterfly", they are amazing. The drawings are very detailed and the colours are vibrant and allow the characters to jump off the pages. I am currently working on edits on the first book with Aptara corp. However, if anyone is interested in the 1st edition of book they are available in print format on Amazon and Chapters.com and in ebook format on iTunes and for everyone who has a kobo it is available @ kobo…

Don’t be fooled regarding one’s tongue,
for it has the power of life and death.
Before doubting these words of wisdom,
now pay attention and catch your breath…
before any more idle words touch the ground.
We are accountable for everything we say;
Therefore, remember to think before speaking,
since our reckonings will come on Judgment Day.
Consciously refrain from speaking evil…

O Lord, how much of this reality
has no earthly bindings on me?
Help to shape my perception,
regarding the things, that I see.
As an intelligent person,
it’s obvious to avoid indifference
and fear, especially when there is…
a clear choice with a sure preference.
Although the future is unknown,
there's a proven solution to help one cope.
The guidance of the Scriptures…

Every writer is asked it all the time: "Where do your stories come from?"
The journey to writing my clerical mystery A DARKLY HIDDEN TRUTH, The Monastery Murders 2 was a long one, beginning with a pilgrimage I took to 17 ancient sacred sites in England and Scotland in 2001--taking one of the first plans to fly out of Boise after 9/11.
That pilgrimage included visiting the churches of two medieval women writers Julian of Norwich, the first woman to write a book in English, and…

Another fresh month is upon us and that means another start at zero for my books sales count. Last month ended pretty well with a last couple of days blitz that netted enough sales to reach my goals. However, it was a tough struggle, not helped by the fact that I was on vacation for nine days and did little in terms of marketing and promotion (not that I’m complaining). My sales goals for this month may be unreachable since I don’t have any sponsorships planned for this month. It’s going to…
