Chapter 2: The Wizard of Odd

Chapter 2: The Wizard of Odd

The next day was a Saturday, and indeed, started off as if the previous night had never happened. My father was jovial, mentioning no deities, while my mom breathed a sigh of relief. In a conspiratorial tone she suggested we take a bike ride. This is the last unabashedly positive recollection I have of my dad. He was so good a rider that he could sail beside me and playfully kick gravel at my wheels in a hard gray snowball fight…

'Tis the Season

My guess is that you either love this time of year or hate it.  Despite the busyness and madness involved with shopping, I'll admit that I love it.  Yeah, you can call me sentimental (I am) or a born romantic (guilty as charged) but I find my heart softening (for which my family is thankful!) and my generosity increasing (for which certain charities are thankful!)

Which brings me back to why I'm posting today.  Yesterday, while cooking homemade soup ("oh, geez, here it comes!") and…

Question: How important is a You Tube video to the sale of a story?

I need to ask you as a reader, is: ”A You Tube video important to you? Does it help in your purchasing decision?”, How much does it sway you to push that button to make the purchase?”

Trestle Press has not been using its You Tube page much to this point. Some of the authors have been making videos lately in the hopes of increasing sales, or just getting their work more…

Sacrifices made

It’s raining today. Drops slide down my window like translucent

snails. Water puddles in the street. Worms

tunnel up from drowning liquid and sprawl across the sidewalk. And here I sit

in front of my computer belting out another novel. I forget who said it, but I

remember a quote that summed up the writing life completely. The quote went

simply; being a writer is like having homework every day for the rest of your

life. And that’s true for the serious, passionate…

THE WORD ON SELF-PUBLISHING / PRINT ON DEMAND - ADDED 11-29-2011

BMN - Of course, I forgot to add the cost of an agent, if you go that way - and this is a big expense.  And, too - you pay tax on your earnings.  Finally, I doubt that you'll get 40% of what's sold.  That's obsolete, also.  Maybe you'll get 12% - 15%.  The book publishing industry is set up as any capitalist enterprise, to maximize profits and part of doing so is to cut the cost of their material, and that's YOU,…

Riding to Texas part Two

DAY 4-8

Had a nice visit with family in Frisco and among other things took in a major league baseball game and viewed a high school football game from the press box. High School football on a Friday night in Texas! Hooah!

DAY 9: The Trip Back

I left Frisco about 0800 or so heading east on the Dallas tollroad to pick up Interstate 635 which would lead me to US 80 and then on to Interstate 20 east. Riding directly into the sun makes it almost impossible to read the road…

You read about death every day, see the reports on television. Some are called ‘accidents.’ The murders seem senseless and go unsolved. Did you…

The Power of Words

Words have power. They can make someone’s day. (“You have beautiful eyes.”) Or, they can break someone’s heart. (“I don’t love you anymore.”) We writers know about proper sentence structure and how to place our carefully chosen words within a sentence to create the effect we want. And we strive to do that in our novels.…

Interviewing Writers

Interviewing Writers

I have been trying to help out some writers by doing interviews on my blog.  I really thought that many people and other writers would take some interest and leave a comment or two of encouragement.  In spite of my efforts announcing the up and coming interviews each week on many social groups, I have been quite disappointed in the lack of support.

Perhaps I…

The Word on Self-Publishing / Print on Demand

I thought it wasn't long ago that John K. complained that there was not enough material on BMN that stimulated discussion. With a cursory search, though, I have not found anything relevant. Nevertheless, I will upload an item below, - and if, in reply, I get only offers to buy insurance, blogs telling me how much emotional support someone derives from his/her religion, and photos of his/her children and grandchildren - I might withdraw from BMN.

THE…
