Stand Alone vs. Series Novels

When I conceived the idea for my first mystery/suspense novel, Mixed Messages, my goal was to write a stand alone novel. I planned to introduce and develop my characters, tell their story and, by the…Continue

Something About Me and My Book:
"Mixed Messages," the first novel in my Malone mystery series, will be published by Post Mortem Press in April and available April 17th on Amazon and the publisher's website.
It's estimated that there are at least twenty to thirty active serial killers in the United States at any given time. There's one on the loose in Westwood.
Ann Kern is struggling to save her troubled marriage to an alcoholic and preserve her family when, due to a series of threatening notes and frightening events, she becomes convinced that she is the Westwood Strangler's next intended victim.

The Devil's in the Details

Writing a series can be a challenge. When you're writing the second or third book, it can be difficult to keep track of all the details you’ve already written in the first book. As G. Thomas Gill commented on one of my recent posts, Stand Alone vs. Series Novels, “to remember each and every little detail about your character, like what he drinks, the color car she drives, or his detest of Thai…

Creating Characters

The process of creating a character is like conceiving, carrying and giving birth to a baby who will, no doubt, have Mom’s nose or Grandpa’s ears. Truth IS stranger than Fiction

In real life, when we hear of someone doing something bizarre or out of character, we often wonder, “What on earth possessed him to do that?” And, if we know the person, we might even think “That’s not like him.” But, since we know that he did it, we have no choice but to shrug our shoulders, shake our heads, accept it and move on. How do writers choose the titles for their novels? When I think of some of my favorite authors, Mary Higgins Clark comes immediately to mind. She often uses the titles of old songs. For example, You Belong to Me, Let Me Call You Sweetheart and All Around the Town. James Patterson’s Women’s Murder Club Series starts with 1st to Die and is up to The 10th Anniversary. And, Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone…

Orientation to writing is not the same as being taught in high school. "Play it forward" means listen to someone who writes and sells.

"What if" I sold a million books? Did I win the lottery?
