Mini-Olympics and Comic-Con

This week's Mr. Teacher column over on education.com is my own little celebration of the Olympics, going on as we speak over in Berlin. Mine is perhaps a bit more on the wordy side, and less on the feats of physical ability side, but hey, at least there will be no controversy over underage Chinese gymnasts with my… Continue

Falling Flat On Your Face

Falling Flat On Your Face

August 13th, 2008

Do you know what the difference is between those who fall flat on their faces and those who never do? Those who fall flat where actually trying to do something! I have done a lot of reading about successful people. The thing that stands out to me over and over is that they all fell flat many times. The things they wanted seemed out of reach. They did not have what they needed to reach their goals- or so it seemed. They failed a lot.… Continue

Flip Your Cube

Living a Writerpreneur life can be overwhelming. Self-employed writers need to wear many hats. Of course, there’s the writing. That’s the core of our career. There’s also all the other actions that require attention: marketing, banking, goal setting, correspondence, reading, learning, and research. Plus there are those other important elements of family, recreation, and home life.

I used to stress “balance” in life. That each element got a little bit of time each day. I realized… Continue

Tickets to the Olympics

Tickets to the Olympics

We all have them don’t we? First row, the view is great, and the seats comfortable—our TV screen provides all, or nearly all amenities you’d find in the arenas in China.

Don’t you love the excitement, the anticipation and the thrill of watching the United States team move toward the finish line?

No different for you and me—we dash off to the next task, next goal, next milestone, next achievement. Phew! But when we get there, a gold medal… Continue

Self Introduction

The Bill Perring Primer

Probably More Than You Ever Wanted To Know

I live in the county of Surrey, a part of England known as ‘God’s own acre’ – at least by those of us who live here. In fact I’m not sure that God actually knows where Surrey is, which is pretty good since it means we have so far been spared plagues of boils and locusts, and no one in living memory has been turned into a column of salt – though a friend of mine once turned in a sort of column (for a… Continue

Second Chances

August 11th, 2008

Have you ever failed in a relationship that you really wanted, or that you really did not mean to mess up? I don’t just mean your love life here, though it can be that kind of relationship. I am speaking of any relationship- spouses, parents, children, friends, co-workers, etc. I know I have. I have blown several relationships in my life that I really, truly thought I was acting in the best way possible. My heart was right. I was doing the best I knew… Continue

Compassion

Jesus Christ demonstrated the greatest example of compassion by giving His life for all who have fallen short of His glory. We should be grateful for His mercy. There is healing power from a heart that beats with compassion.

Public speaking as book marketing

When people list their fears, one phobia tops even death—public speaking. However, that’s exactly what I do to introduce people to my books. I present writers’ workshops at national and regional conferences. I give talks to readers’ groups and speak to library associations. Some writers, by virtue of their heroine’s vocation, have a built in constituency for their books—knitters, teachers, karate instructors—you get the idea. Since I write historical romance, there’s no gimmick or hook for my… Continue

From shy, to finding my own voice, to writing a book

Check out this story...about my journey...

"I received this email from author, Pam Kumpe yesterday and I thought my blog readers would like, yet, another perspective on writing. Pam shares with us some of the insecurities she experienced at the thought of putting herself out there through her writing. And then she fills us in about her successes. I think that her story is inspiring and interesting. So I invited Pam to be my guest blogger this morning. Here’s Pam…

European Tours You Can't Pass Up

Sounds inviting, doesn’t it? I was a bit envious when a friend related her recent European tour. She described some delightful details. But the best part was that this great escapade was her husband’s surprise birthday gift. “The only thing is,” she said, “was that the trips from city to city required long bus rides.”

I know the feeling. The few times I rode in a bus going from point A to point B were endless, boring, hugely monotonous, and fatiguing. I could say I don’t know why,… Continue

The Challenges of Being a Publisher

As the founder and VP of a legitimate publishing company, very rarely do I open up about the challenges associated with running a business, particularly a publishing company. So, here are the facts, as I see them. So, maybe I should say here are my experiences.

When I first started, I was on my own. I wasn't married yet, and barely had enough energy to get out of bed, but I felt commissioned to help publish material that matters, that changes lives. I had on rose-colored glasses for… Continue

Dirty Little Secrets...Shuuu

Dirty Little Secrets…shuuuu

August 8th, 2008

How many of you hold on to some secret part of your past? Something you are ashamed of, have even asked God to forgive you for but, you can not forgive yourself?

I see this a lot. I think it is one of the slickest tricks Satan uses on us. He wants us to stay locked in guilt and shame so we will not be powerful in God’s kingdom. He knows your soul is not his to toy with, but he hopes by playing mind games with you he can keep you… Continue
