Hot Trends, Hot Markets - Social Networking and How Authors Can Use Them to the Fullest Potential

In July I presented on a panel at the 2008 CanWrite! Conference in Edmonton, Alberta. The topic of my panel was Hot Trends, Hot Markets, and it was the only panel that ran separately as a main feature. As an author, I looked at this topic from the perspective of aspiring and published authors.

As someone who's been nicknamed "Shameless Promoter" because I promote my books with everything I've got, utilizing everything I can think of or learn about, I want to share what I've learned.… Continue

Can Non Profits Use Social Network Sites To Make A Profit?

There's an old saying, "Rules without Relationship bring Rebellion"

I feel asking money before demonstrating purposeful charity can send mixed messages into the hearts of givers. In short if people give to "what you do," without loving it or having a heart for it, they will usually leave confused asking the question. "Why did I give them my money in the first place?"

In short Social Networks are an idea… Continue

Devin Bull on "It isn't what you know, it's who you know"

It isn't what you know, it's who you know. That's mostly how much of the

third world operates. People get ahead in their social status, their careers

and their economic development based on who they know, who their friends

know, etc. In Western developed economies, although externally shunned

because of its political incorrectness, this concept largely thrives behind

a facade of smiles and obedience to the system. Sure, some people who

follow the system according… Continue

Networking Power, Part 1

Networking is more than just meeting new people. It is also identifying people you can partner with. Partnering in this sentence meaning where both parties can benefit from the friendship. Unfortunately, most networkers only want to find clients/customers. That is not the point of networking at all.

When on these kinds of sites, it is imperative to share your information and offerings, but it is more important to build friendships, learn the people in the groups with you. Notice who… Continue

Wow, Golly and Gee Wiz

Holly Cow what a great network of which to me a member. I only just joined yesterday and already I've picked up tons of good information on how to promote a book. For me the information is simply invaluable because it comes from direct experience and not simply theory.

Self promotion can be a tough job. This is something which which I am very familiar. In the early 90's I was the owner operator of a small Canadian import / export and distribution company. I sourced products overseas… Continue

Great Place to Be

Writing is by nature a solitary profession and more than occasionally frustrating. This is especially true when it comes to marketing yourself as a writer, pitching a book proposal or article or promoting something you've already published.

A network like this is a great place for writers to hang out and exchange information, tips and generally rub elbows with other writers. I's often said that misery loves company but, just being part of a supportive network might in fact make one… Continue
