Are Book Publishers Going the Way of the Railroads?

Over 72% of publishers surveyed on the impact of digitization on book publishing by the Frankfurt Book Fair and the German trade magazine Buchreport said the development of new business models, new multimedia products and effective marketing strategies are the biggest challenges facing publishers as they transition from print to digital.

Duh! The publishers are slow to react to the changing customer demands.

The publisher’s lateness to the party reminds me of the… Continue

The Value of Publisher's Rejections

Receiving rejection slips aren't life threatening; it's part of life's lessons. We all receive rejections whether we want them or not. Instead of allowing them to vanquish us, learn to see tham as part of your 'writer's curriculum.'

Horror lines I have read:

I have enough rejection slips to paper my walls, Rejection slips and I go hand-in-hand; It's a measure of my failure level."

When receiving rejections writers feel they have lost inches to their stature. It hurts.… Continue

If you self-publish your book are you a published author?

I read an interesting blog post today that states "First and foremost, a self-published novel does not a published author make." I find that statement most disturbing. It goes on to talk about the expectations of the author. If one just wants to put their novel out for a few friends then it is okay to use a vanity press. But you won't ever sell a "zillion" books. She also… Continue

Frankfurter Buchmesse: Pearls from the Bosporus (Satis Shroff, Freiburg)

Frankfurter Book Fair:

Pearls from the Bosporus (Satis Shroff)

What happens when a TV moderator organises a show and prizes are awarded to Veronica Ferres 43 (best actress), Misel Maticevic 38 (best actor), ‘Contergan’ (best film) and the best show ‘Germany sucht den Superstar?’ An award show is in itself a comedy and slapstick affair but Thomas Gottschalk made a mistake this time. You can’t award stars and starlets, pruducers and directors in the same way you that you… Continue

Is the end of the world coming for the book industry?

New York Magazine published an article that looks at the downward spiral of the book business. As writer Boris Kachka says, "The book business as we know it will not be living happily ever after." He goes on to describe the "horror" that is now the book world--slow sales, staff cuts, empty offices and more. Indeed, he paints a sad… Continue
