For My Daughter

I think about my daughter now. She is sweet and innocent. She loves her daddy. I am the man in her life.

Then I think about ten years from now (fifteen, if I get my way). She will most likely have a new man in her life. She will be thinking about romance and marriage.

That's what was on my mind as I wrote the latest volume of my Amish Journey. I will admit that I had to move away from the keyboard for a while. I couldn't see what I was typing through the tears. So, I…

I loved that they told me they learned things from the book about our ancestors that they didn’t know. The book wouldn't have been possible if the relatives hadn't shared their stories and pictures with me. What is important about this book is the fact that future generations of each of the nine Bright children belonging to John…

Chapter 7: Bible Cruddy

Without having to spend his time constantly job-hunting, my father was able to focus more energy on his religious pursuits and impositions. He became more adamant about going to church – rain, shine, or apocalypse. That Sunday was the first time we stayed to attend the after-church blesstivities: Bible study for my father (my mother refused to escalate to this level of insanity), and Sunday school for my brothers and I.

I came to the Sunday School room hesitantly. My dad guided me…

Voice Check: Who Is Master and Who Is Slave of Self Within?

When was the last time you had a VC? Yeah, that’s right - a voice check. I had one today, yesterday and the day before that. And I’ll have one tomorrow, the next day, and the day after that, and the day after those, too. Until I become master of self, I’ll live the rest of my days engaging in VC’s. Actually, I have several VC’s throughout the day.

“Why is conducting a voice check so important”, you might ask?…

My experience at Career Day with Shoemaker HIgh School in Killeen Texas

On October the 13th of 2010, I had the most intimidating, amazing day of my life. I had been invited, by the school counselor, to be a guest motivation speaker on senior day at Shoemaker High School in Killeen, Texas. It was career day for these kids, and I was asked to share my story in a motivational way.

This was something I had dreamed of since I started my journey of self-discovery and healing about 5 years ago, but I never thought I would truly have the strength and courage to do it.… Continue
