Instead of stacking rejection slips by touting your manuscript around agents and traditional publishing houses, a podding agreement will let a publisher take your manuscript, edit and format the text ready for firing out paperback or hardback copies as soon as the orders come in.
DragonCub will also help with marketing the book, but because DragonCub cuts the overheads, you earn a bigger royalty on each sale.

Your first step in querying a publisher should be to order the book
Writer’s Market. The book is available through Amazon.com for about $20. Writer’s Market includes 4,000 listings for book publishers, consumer magazines, trade journals, and literary agents. Most publishers’ listings in the book will tell you if they accept new authors,…

I was sitting there tonight with my son and daughter, when Katie asked me how to spell a word. She had written it on her homework page 3 different ways, and she said none of them looked right. So, being the brilliant homework technician I am, I told her to look it up. We did it together, and found the answer she needed.
When writing fiction, we are faced with two choices. We can make it up, or we can look it up. Unless you’re recreating the world of the Hobbits, let me recommend the…

10 steps to getting started as a motivational speaker (Part 1)
By Lynn Serafinn, MAED, CPCC
author, speaker and personal transformation coach
Many of us have things we learned in life that we’d like to share. For that reason, we might dream about becoming a motivational speaker. And in reality, while the competition is stiff out there, not everyone is a gifted speaker. Being able to hold a room and really inspire people is a gift—and if you've got it, I say, GO for…

The Three P’s of Writing
I have had an occasion recently to witness the turmoil of some writers and publishers when things don’t go according to plan. It was a sad thing to watch, and I am grateful to have maintained good working relationships with all the parties involved. I offer, therefore, some assistance for the new, budding, aspiring, frustrated writer still working on getting their masterpiece into the hands of the readers. Please take it for what it is, and I hope these tips…

As many of you already know, I'm self-published and currently have three books "out there". I posted this on my good friend and book reviewer Geri Ahearn's blog a little while ago...
Writing your book is definitely the easy part of an author's journey... once you have the book in your hands, getting it out to the readers, especially if you're self-published, is probably the biggest challenge that we as authors have never really thought about (I know I DEFINITELY…

Fiction authors are often asked, “How do you come up with your novel plots? Where do you find those ideas?” As a Canadian suspense author, I am often asked these questions, and my answers will usually include something about letting ideas percolate and ferment.
I know―it sounds like I’m brewing coffee and making homemade wine, but in reality I’m creating what I hope will be a fast-paced suspense novel that will be enjoyed by readers worldwide. I think that percolating a novel plot is…

Many of us belong to several book and discussion groups, and the benefit to that is that we get to hear from authors and experts in a wide variety of fields. This message came to me from David Montgomery, who writes about books for several major publications. According to the message he sat in on a talk given by bestselling thriller writer Joseph Finder the topic of which was "The Six Biggest Mistakes Even Bestselling Writers Make." It’s also worth noting that when I shared this with my editor…

Which genre any writer chooses to operate in is dependent on the genre they enjoy. I write predominately in the mystery/detective genre because I am such a big fan of Robert B. Parker’s Spenser and Jessie Stone, Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum, and Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe. But it is a great exercise for the good writer to able to write across genres even though he may never have the opportunity to use this versatility. Many stories have the ability to cross or mix genres, so that a…
