Little Lamb Visits Nursing Home

This post won't seem like business at first, but I am a writer and every life experience I have had or will have helps me write a better book. What I've been doing lately will be in my next nurse Hal Amish book.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the month of March is lambing time in my barn. I don't get much done at the computer, book sales for my third Nurse Hal Amish book and ebook. We have had a good lambing season, and the cold days or the snow we had this morning doesn't bother… Continue

Goshen College Amish & Mennonite Author List

Why am I interested? I write Amish fiction, and I’m on the list. After I self published I’ve always been on the lookout for free websites to promote my books. It was my worry that I’d write a book that doesn’t sell after I hired a firm to promote for me. What works for me might not be the way most authors publish and sell their book. I’ve put my books in different author sites and blog posts, thinking that might take longer than paid advertising, but I wouldn’t lose money. Besides, I can…

Alzheimer's Volunteer Caregivers Up 37%

Baby boomers have reached the age to have Alzheimer's disease. Good Morning America scrolled across the screen there is now 15 million volunteer caregivers which is up 37%. These caregivers need as much information as they can get on how to take care of a person with Alzheimer's.

I've written a book titled Open A Window - Alzheimer's Caregiver Handbook. I'm very proud of how much this book helps caregivers. It's written in layman's terms. Caregivers who read the book can identify… Continue

Good Old Day Magazine Buys My Story

If you have a subscription to Good Old Days magazine watch for a story with my by line in the May/June issue. Last summer, I submitted a story which was a take off of a blog post about what my family did on Memorial Days in the 1950’s. You might be able to find the post in my blog so I won’t rerun it here. This is the 6th story the magazine has bought from me.

I’ve heard the old saying that we become our parents. I happen to be a combination of mine. My father was a delightful…

Author Following Links

Following links isn't anything new for me. When I see one that might lead to advertising or to a new place to sell my books I check the site out. One of the words I look for in these links is the word free. I like keeping my costs down. Makes me more profit as an independent author selling her own books. Sometimes, Google search picks up me in the link. It always amazes me how many pages are about my books when I Google search. This has happened because of the sites I have linked myself.… Continue

Bushwhacker Museum, Nevada, Mo. & Civil War books

I just finished reading The Saber and the Ring by Patrick Brophy (ISBN 1893046168). The proceeds of his books go to the Bushwhacker Museum in Nevada, Missouri to help with expenses. Mr. Brophy had a love for words and a pride in being able to put those words into articles and books about a subject he knew well which was his birthplace, Vernon County, and its history, the Civil War.

My father used to tell his children stories about the Civil War, but I must confess I paid very little… Continue

Smashwords Ebook Sales

I spent this last weekend downloading four of my books to Smashwords.com to be approved and put for sale on the website. It will take a week to find out if the downloads meet the hosts approval. Though they can turn the books into many different formats for different type of ebook readers, the format they wanted for the download was Microsoft document. Took me awhile to figure that one out because I don't have Microsoft. There are many other format guidelines to follow. I had to unpublish and… Continue

Good Reads Historical Read Challenge

Historical de Genre Tour on Good Reads sponsored by host site Bitsy Bling Books for the year 2011, and I signed up for the challenge. My reading time consists mostly of evenings during a television show I don't like or during the commercials of a show I do like. I love to read. Historical fiction is one of my favorite genre so what few books I do get read in this year I will be more than happy to enter at Good Reads.

A good many of the historical books I read are westerns which might not… Continue

More Free Contests

When I entered the November Novel writing site this week, I found a list of free contests. If you missed the November contest and would like to try writing a 50,000 word book in a different month, the contest will be held in June and September as well as November of next year. You can google search for the links.

The Amazon Break Through Novel contest is going to be open for submissions in mid January. I've entered that with no expectation of winning, but to be a contestant…

Finished NaNoWriMo Contest

I’m back after missing a few Tuesday posts. My competitive side came out while I tried to prove to myself I could succeed at this contest. On Sunday, I pasted into the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) site what is to be my next book. I modestly put 51,900 words in my word estimate updater. The validater totaled 52,028 words. That puts me well over the 50,000 I needed. According to the site that makes me a winner along with most of the 36,000 plus other contestants.

Last year,…

Athena Club Presentation Over

For just a few days, I imagined a well thought out plan for what I was going to do to promote my Civil War book at the Athena Club meeting in Belle Plaine, Iowa last night. That all changed last Tuesday with a sizable dent in my car's driver door. My door won't open until the repair work is done so I'm stuck with driving the car like it is. Until that happy moment when I can get in and out of my car like any other driver, I'm getting in on the passenger side and squeezing between the gear shift… Continue

Fay Risner Publishes 18th Book

I’ve been without an internet or phone for two days. As I’m writing this blog post, I have a connection but it keeps coming and going. Seems the wind gusting up to 50 miles an hour is interfering so I’m making this short.

I’ve always liked to read westerns and watch cowboy shows. Maybe because I was raised that way. In the fifties my parents took us to western movies in a vacant lot during the summer. We sat on hard benches on Saturday evenings and enjoyed every minute. Since westerns…

Keosauqua, Iowa Road Trip

Last Thursday was the day I spoke at the Van Buren County Hospital Women's Health Fair at Keosauqua, Iowa. Wow! Did I get more out of the day than just speaking and selling books. Although being there did give me a chance to meet a lot of friendly people and spread the word about my books.

That morning, the sun shone brightly on Iowa fields filled with combines and tractors. The farther south we drove, the more leaves colored. The hundred and twelve miles was fairly flat land. We… Continue

Where Did September Go?

An alert for Indie authors. Online Barnes and Nobel's Nook program is open to self published authors. I received an email and immediately enrolled. I've downloaded two book. In the coming days, I'll be downloading the rest of the books I've written.

I still have a book to edit and hope to get that job finished soon so I can get it published. This is a Stringbean Hooper Western titled Small Feet's Many Moon Journey. I'd like to get that out of the way before November. I'm entering the… Continue

Short Story Awarded Sixth Place

The results are in for a short story I entered this summer in White County Creative Writers Contests at Searcy, Arkansas. I was awarded sixth place for a version of the story I received second place for in an earlier contest. This time the story could only be 1500 words. That meant I had to do some drastic cutting and at the same time keep the basic story in tact. I managed to do just that, but I like the longer version better so that is my post for today. This story takes place during the…

Risner To Speak At Women Health Fair

I've been invited to be the guest speaker at Van Buren County Hospital's Women Health Fair in Keosauqua, Iowa on October 14, 2010 from 2:30 - 5:30 p.m. I'll be speaking about my Alzheimer's Caregiver Experiences. This year's theme is "Fight Like A Girl". The expected attendance is around 200. This sounds like a fun experience, but I think I'll keep my fingers crossed that I do a good job.

How did I end up with this invitation? I joined a website for Iowa authors… Continue

Taping Interview Sold Story

I’m interviewing my mother-in-law about her early years. Why you might ask? Well, she’s going to turn 90 years old in a couple weeks. There is so much about her life that should be interesting to her grandchildren and great grandchilden since life today is so different from when she was born. We’re thankful that this woman is one sharp minded cookie and able to be a main stay in our lives as long as we can keep her with us. She has been dubbed Little Grandma because she’s an agile, healthy…

Short Story Contest Winner

The winners up to sixth place are now out and online for the Arkansas Writers’ Conference contests at Little Rock, Arkansas.

I placed second in contest 25. Look What The Cat Dragged In. Title of my short story was The Unexpected Visitor. Guidelines for this entry - a short story and no word limit which is great for me. I know 2500 words is about the top limit for an entry, but I like it when I don’t have to watch the count close.

I’ve been entering this set of…

Cozy Mystery Website Adding My Mystery Series

If you like cozy, clean mysteries like the Amazing Gracie Mystery Series I write, I've found a site on an Amazon mystery discussion group. There are many books to choose from at http://www.cozy-mystery.com The site had an email contact for the host so I sent a message requesting she try a complimentary copy of Neighbor Watchers - ISBN 1438246072 so she can see for herself what my mystery series is like and think about adding my books to her… Continue
