    Kaycee,
You fund marketing the same way you eat an elephant, one small bite at a time. Each copy you sell invest a little into selling the next one, and so on. Good luck!
  • Kristie Leigh Maguire

Thanks for the invitation, Kaycee. Happily accepted. :)

Why not check out my publishing house, Star Publish LLC (http://starpublish.com) if you are wanting to be published? We do have a Marketing Department which is unusual in small press publishing houses of our size. We also have a fantastic optional marketing program to bookstores which costs less than a cup of coffee a day.

    Kaycee,
I have 15 self-published novels out. I have had an Amazon No. 1 bestselling Scottish book, won many awards, and had one selected as best timetravel of the year by Affaire de Coeur magazine.
Like you, I write in various genres. It keeps life from being boring!
I have had to do my own marketing, and I had no idea who to go about that. I did things that were so simple, as Kristie Leigh Maguire (owner of Star Publish LLC) says, "These things are so simple, I could have thought of them...but I didn't!" You can find them in my PromoPaks, which are available in the ebookstore at http://starpublish.com.
I have a very limited budget, so most of them cost nothing to impliment.
But the first thing to do is to get your books out there. I highly recommend Star Publish. You can find all the information at the above website.
As for agents, I have had 8 of them. None of them ever got me anywhere. Would you like their names? Oh, two of them seem to have dropped off the face of the earth, but the other six--including the one who returned 9 mss. to me, leaving them on my front steps in pouring down rain...well, I guess you wouldn't be too interested, huh?
Best one I know is Gail Fortune. She used to be an editor at Berkley/Jove. Nicest lady, but I don't know how many new authors she's taking on. Still, Google her and send her a query.
    At any rate, good luck
  • Kim Smith

Welcome Janet and Kristie, I shall certainly look into Star :) as I am totally interested.
  • Carolyn Howard-Johnson

    Dear Kaycee:
Thank you for inviting me. I also believe in promotion. The first book in the HowToDoItFrugally Series of books for writers is THE FRUGAL BOOK PROMOTER: HOW TO DO WHAT YOUR PUBLISHER WON'T. I can tell by sales that lots of authors are catching on to the idea they must promote. Every single one of the ideas in tht book are things I tried myself on the road to winning an award from the publisher of my novel as the top marketed book in the year it was published. And they're all free or nearly so.
I look forward to being a friend...though I'm still learning this stuff, don't quite know how to use it beyond accepting and inviting. (-:

    Hi Kim! Nice meeting you.

    Hi Kim

Good luck on getting an agent. Remember, though, even if you are traditionally published, unless you're a King or a Rowlings you're still gonna have to do your own marketing, so keep up with the marketing blogs and forums. But, it doesn't have to be terribly expensive. Mostly creative if one has the energy.
