Something About Me and My Book:
My eighth book, Color Mastery: 10 Principles for Creating Stunning Quilts, is a road map for quilters to get better color in their quilts. I live in the foothills of the Appalachians in North Georgia with my husband and two sons. I'm passionate about color, and my specialty is taking complicated topics and making them simple. My previous seven books were software application titles, and how I'm writing about my passion: color and quilting

Great Example of Book Trailer on YouTube

Here's a simple trailer for an upcoming how-to title on small weekly art quilts by Jeanne Williamson. It's simply a series of still photos of Jeanne's process: how several elements come together to make an art quilt.

The trailer is super simple, gives a glimpse into her upcoming book, and gives the website for the book. Incidentally, this book is coming from big-time publisher Potter Craft, a division of Clarkson-Potter, and Jeanne obviously did this video herself.

My Eighth Book: Color Mastery

My eighth title is coming out next month: Color Mastery: 10 Principles for Creating Stunning Quilts. I had so much fun writing this book. Writing a quilting book is far more than a writing: I designed and made the quilts, developed the instructions, hired the photographer, book designer, two editors, illustrator, and pattern testers. It was a labor of love and I consider it my third child!

Here's the cover:

and the… Continue

Great Article on Publishers' Reduced Marketing Efforts

Beneath the Cover has a great blog posting on publishers raising the bar for almost impossibly high author platforms , so books sell on their own with almost no marketing effort from the publisher. Patrice's book, The Web-Savvy Writer, really outlines great strategies for author platforms, marketing, and… Continue

Self-Publishing a Graphics-Intensive Book

Has anyone self-published a book with lots of graphics and photos? I self-published one of my books, but it had only a few graphics, and it was years ago before POD. The challenge I'm wondering about is the size of the files and getting them to the printer. My book would be about 100 pages, and it would have at least one or two graphics or photos on each page, and it would be in color. It seems extremely expensive. Any experience with this?

Editor Who Requested My Proposal Didn't Remember Who I Was

The publishing industry amazes me that they're able to turn a profit, even as long as I've been involved with it. I called a publisher today to find out the status of a proposal that they had requested. The Executive Editor didn't know who I was, didn't recognize my book proposal, and didn't know where it was. She then asked me, "Are you in a hurry to get it back?" Well, yes, another publisher is interested and I need it.

And this is a recognized industry leader in the quilt book… Continue

Hi Maria,
I'm a freelance writer, editor and book-writing coach. Congrats on publishing 7 books! I have several I'm working on of my own, and several I'm editing for other folks. You're an inspiration!

I made two quilts, one for each of my children, when they were babies. They still enjoy them today, more than 20 years later!

I look forward to getting to know you.

Hi Maria,

I hear from lots of people who have read half of the book online, then buy it. It's hard to know whether it helps sales. You're right, it is a gamble.

Hi, Maria. We have a friend in common and I decided to introduce myself. I have several family members who enjoy quilting and whom I believe would enjoy your book. Walk in faith--we know that it's all about timing--the Lord's timing!

Many blessings!
