For book/ebook authors, publishers, & self-publishers
Recently I heard a well known youth author talk about having an agent. He discouraged it. He feels that agents today do very little for you and that a publishing company does very little. Therefore, he encourages going directly to a publisher if you can be so successful, or publish as an indie. As a hybrid author, I think he may be right. However, I find that writing for fun keeps your brain operating, and creative thoughts moving along. Great to be living.

It all began in Juneau; panhandle capital of Alaska. That’s where my first novel, North Slope, opened. And that’s one of the reasons we wanted to cruise Alaska: to see just what it was like. Although my book was published thirty five years ago; a curiosity about the country has always been part of mine and Pat’s life. Pat’s more so than mine. As an author, I suppose it’s natural to forget about the places in which the stories are set, but for Pat it meant…Continue

Why do we seek out books that we hope will help us release our pent-up feelings? It seems like crying is something we would like to avoid, but somehow we feel good and refreshed afterwards.
Well, I’ve come across a book that is so heartfelt, profound and poetic in its approach to living, loving, and letting go. Peggy Warren’s “Very Much a Woman’s book” is a cathartic piece of art that seems to exude something so beautiful. Each poem in the book allows you to feel the emotions that the…Continue

When a family welcomes a new member, change will occur in the life of the family as a whole. The family has to deal with everyday life in a new way. It may take some time to make adjustments and work out the growing pains in order to live together successfully.
To help your children accept change in the family structure it is important to allow them to participate in welcoming the new individual. Keep them involved and allow them to come up with acceptable and creative ways to…

Who do you think are the most influential American abolitionists? Well, here’s a look at five individuals who helped pushed for the end of slavery. I’m sure these are familiar names. Thomas Jefferson (1706-1790) – The 3rd president of the United States was a slave owner himself; however, it is widely held that he was opposed to the institution of slavery on both moral and practical grounds. In 1784, Jefferson proposed to the United States Congress legislation that slavery should be banned in…Continue

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, yet is considered a “son of Baltimore.” He came from a Baltimore family, spent a part of his life there, and died in the city. It’s been said that his literary career was ignited when he won a contest sponsored by the Baltimore Saturday Visiter.
His last surviving residence in Baltimore was opened as a historic house in 1949 and is home to the Edgar Allan Poe Society. The brick building, located at 203 North Amity Street, was set to…

What does it means to be Chinese in the US today with Beijing throwing its weight around. Is it true? The fact is, it is not true. Beijing is not throwing its weight around. Beijing is not militarizing. It is only telling the whole world what it own over 2000 years ago, and this property is still their property today.

We all like to think our writing, however wonderful, also has commercial value. My recently published hiking book Hiking Southwest Utah and Adjacent Areas has a dozen or so online sales each month—not bad. Now, thanks to the Zion National Park Foundation, my hiking guide is available at Zion National Park Visitor Center.
Zion has approximately three million visitors per year. While they don’t all check out the visitor center, tens (hundreds?) of thousands do. I imagine…Continue

As the Civil War veterans aged into the twentieth century, there seemed a lull in historical interest. Fewer regimental histories were published. Johnnie Wickersham’s memoirs were published in 1918, shortly after his death. The Robert Hendershot controversy came to a close, the first collection of biographical information about boys from the war was published, and the last veteran of the Civil War retired from active duty. Robert Hendershot was confirmed to be the drummer boy of the…Continue

As most authors now know Amazon is going to start paying authors for the amount of pages read and not for each complete book. I’m not certain how I feel about this. On the plus side, it could free readers up to explore more books if they are only going to pay for it if they like it. On the negative, most casual readers never finish a book or do it over a long period of time. And how about if readers skip a section? What will it do to royalties?
Of course, there are other…Continue
