BEING YOUR OWN PUBLISHER
Yeah, yeah, there's new tech parameters and a paradigm shift and all that.
But the important thing is that there are (and always have been) alternatives to writing something then trying to sell the rights to a publishing company. This group is to explore these areas of self-owned publishing biz.
Some writers have niche books, some have special needs (like texts for their seminars), some are just too entrepreneurial to sell of their own inspirations. And some just want to see something in print.
There is a spectrum these days, from big publishers through the new, small POD publishers, to using publishing services like lulu.com or iuniverse, to printing yourself and selling online, to release of downloadable mp3 "podcasts" or pdf manuals.
If you have expertise, experience, or questions in this area, don't be shy about posting them here. It's a rapidly expanding field and nobody knows everything about it, but lots of us are learning enough to do what we want to do and successfully get it across the counter.

Did you have any trouble getting your book into Ingram or Baker & Taylor as well as Amazon, B&N, etc.?

Responding to Rick's question "what is your favorite way to self-publish?" It's by way of my own company, which my husband and I formed 13 years ago. We hired professional editors, jacket designers, found good printers, and publish under our own imprint, Gypsy Moon Press. We also get tax write-offs and our company pays me royalties. All in all, a pretty good arrangement.

My first book was published with Publish America.
The second, third, and fourth were published with www.lulu.com

Hi, everyone. I self-published with Dog Ear, then paid someone to create my web site. My book went up on Amazon over a year ago and I began blogging on Blogger. I was recently invited to be a featured blogger on www.wellsphere.com in their Dental Community - a tremendous honor and recognition because my subject of oral health, keeping teeth, tooth loss, and denture gain is a difficult one. I can sure use some tips. I am no techie.

Event for Self-Published authors.
October 18th, Wag Fest Literary Bazaar is the place to for self-published authors.
Wag Fest Litertainment is more than a literary conference and bazaar; it is a movement that promotes self sufficiency and resourcefulness. Although not exclusive, Wag Fest caters to independent and self published authors, poets, musicians, comedians, and artist. Starting in 2007 in New Jersey, a close knit group of authors got together in the spirit to sell books and have a good time. Since then, a second Wag Fest in March 2008 - this time in Seattle - proved to be a huge success with standing room only and a larger group of artists that traveled cross country to participate in this event. The saying at Wag Fest is "come as strangers but leave as family" and that has proven true time and time again.
In March 2008, Wag Fest Seattle consisted of a bustling poetry party and book bazaar. Special guests, BET Comedian D Lamont Hall and CJ Johnson of Hiram Clarke Films were in attendance, and CJ taught a class at the conference on how to turn your book into a film. CJ has an impressive resume and has worked with some of the best in the film industry. He provided a plethora of valuable information on the movie industry along with offering his services to convert your book into a film or play.
