Review for Sleep Before Evening by Magdalena Ball

Hi, folks!

I rarely accept requests to review books - only because it's so hard to fit in my own writing in the few hours a day I have left after the "day" job and related family responsibilities. ;o) But here is one I agreed to read/review - 'cause I know Maggie Ball is a wonderful writer. She runs the www.compulsivereader.com site - check it out if you haven't yet.…

A visit to Red Deer Chapters

Yesterday, I visited the Red Deer Chapters and held a book signing during the afternoon. The staff was awesome and very helpful, and the customers were great.

I'm quite happy to say we sold out of Whale Song, and I sold some copies of The River and Divine Intervention as well. But as always, it is…

Testimony

"Raise your right hand. Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but?"

I must repeat this oath at least a dozen times a day. Oh no! Not because I’m in court giving my own testimony. What I am doing, as a Spanish Court interpreter, I am interpreting court proceedings. Among the dialogue between judge and defendant is the oath all…

Has anyone had success getting listed on NoveList?

It looks like a new service offered through the public libraries, called NoveList, is becoming a great resource for readers who are starting book clubs or looking for suggestions for books to read. Anyone have any experience with getting their books in the NoveList databases? As far as I can tell, and I might be wrong, it looks like this is a resource that is used from state to state (not a national database). Any information would be appreciated.

Publishing Logo Question

My husband is a terrific artist (for everyone else but me). He graduated from the Chicago School of Art back in the 1960's. I think that is the one he graduated from. Anyway, I have been trying for 2 years to get him to do the logo for my publishing company. I have drawings/doodles all over the house on pieces of paper that he has done, but none of them a logo.

My question is: Is it necessary to have a logo of the publishing company on or in the book or is just the company name and…

Do you need a compelling story line?

The 2005 Independent Newspaper "Best Foreign Book of the Year" - The Flea Palace by Elif Shafak - certainly doesn't have a compelling plot.

What it does have, though, is three clever styles of writing:

1. The whole book is a "story within a story" - a bit like peeling away the layers of the onion skin. Some call this style Kafkaesque.

2. Play on the names of characters. e.g. Injustice Pureturk suffers terrible injustices (a style most famously associated with allegories…

Using Online Press Releases

When trying to get word out on the street about a book signing or event, consider sending out online press releases. You'd think that people would read them and they do of course but ultimately, it makes you a searchable subject. Many allow you to put in keywords. It's a way for more links to come up with you in a typical search engine search.

But if you really want to get something out of your press releases, find the media around the book signing area or even in the State or a…
