Once upon a time, before the advent of the two word insult ending in 'you', There were those who's pride in language and articulation made the art of the insult worth the effort. To those who enjoy the classics, I submit the following:
He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire. -- Winston Churchill
I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure.-- Clarence Darrow
He has never been known to use a word that…

Many of us belong to several book and discussion groups, and the benefit to that is that we get to hear from authors and experts in a wide variety of fields. This message came to me from David Montgomery, who writes about books for several major publications. According to the message he sat in on a talk given by bestselling thriller writer Joseph Finder the topic of which was "The Six Biggest Mistakes Even Bestselling Writers Make." It’s also worth noting that when I shared this with my editor…

Back when I was singing professional opera, occasionally one of the supernumeraries (spear carriers, we used to call them) would do something to upstage the main characters. (Dare I confess to doing it myself sometimes when I was spear carrier?) It’s not always planned, but it happens.
It happens in fiction too. An unsuspecting writer creates a secondary character to fill a need in the hero or heroine’s life and all of a sudden, the bit part refuses to stand quietly holding the…

Okay.... as of little while ago, I received word from the last judge and rather than torture everyone and make them wait until tomorrow, I am going to announce the June anthology contest winners tonight.
It was close. Second and third place were so close together I wasn't sure which direction the judges would go - and apparently they weren't either. You'll see in a minute.
In fact, the person who ended up in fourth was sooooo close to making it too that it came down to…

That’s what characterizes our dishes from Bolivia. But one trait that I shake my head about is the way it’s served.
Contrary to American style, each person is served a full plate. The Hostess scoop a portion of each item on a plate and carries it to the table, placing it before each guest.
This past Friday, my Dad’s brothers arrived from Bolivia for a short visit. And as part of the cultural tradition, my mom insists in serving everyone Bolivian style.
“Let them…

I am having to cancel the Ten Million Eyeballs Event in Boulder, Colorado, due to a problem with our landlord and the next door tenant for the townhouse that my wife and I reside in right now. Because both the landlord and the tenant are irrational people, I really have to stay here during this time to protect my wife from harm.
While this might be bad news for those of you who wanted to take the Boulder course, it's good news for the rest of you. I will be making the Ten Million…

Four Aspects to Creating a Successful Marketing Tool
Although it is widely known that bad press is better than no press, bad advertising is worse than not placing ads at all. Whether print or media, a poorly crafted advertisement will reflected poorly on the product and all companies involved. Whether it is the message, the graphics or the venue, if the commercial isn't up to industry standards, it becomes a liability instead of an asset.
Advertisements have four…

A man's steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand his own way.
Proverbs 20:24
Yesterday we were watching some old videos from when the boys were little. We happened to have one on of Chase's first birthday. It was the day he learned to walk. He was so cute. He'd wobble just a bit and then he'd plop down and then he'd manuever himself back up and walk a few more steps before he'd plop down again.
And sometimes Carson would go over,…

In a rare interview with both Tim Bete AND Cap'n Billy "The Butcher" MacDougall, the co-authors share why they wrote
GUIDE TO PIRATE PARENTING ("Cap’n Billy put his dagger next to my neck and told me I was going to write a book for him") as well as how they placate their muse when she refuses to inspire them ("We ply her with rum").
Read the interview.
