Website Keeps Me Busy

Whew! Just finished updating my website, AGAIN! It feels like I am constantly thinking of things to add or change and I spend so much of my time editing my webpage. Yet, it is one of the things that I enjoy. When I first started my webpage, I put a counter on it and could not wait until it hit 50! When it did, I was so excited. Then, I thought, "Wow! I'd love to see 500!" I've reached that goal and I praise God for his faithfulness b/c just knowing that someone is looking at something you have… Continue

New Article: Magic Words that Sell Books

I came across an amazing book called "The First Hundred Million" that everyone in publishing should, in my opinion, study carefully.

It was written by a man named E. Haldeman-Julius, who in the 1920s published and sold 100 million "Little Blue Books." Simon & Schuster asked him to write up the story of how he did so, and the book "The First Hundred Million" is about what he learned.

I… Continue

Check out the review of my latest novel by an amazon.com Top 50 reviewer

Confessions of an Internet Don Juan is certainly a different and most entertaining read. It's definitely fiction, but I don't know that I would call it a novel – certainly not in the traditional sense. It is instead a series of confessions (I would call them vignettes because the word "confessions" implies a degree of guilt over improper behavior) by which our narrator, Cast Hughes, describes all of the post-divorce…

Grab Your wallet and Pick up the Phone! (Marketing)

Book Marketing is so important! As an author, a bookseller and owner of a small publishing company I am challenged continually about marketing books. I find myself watching other ads for other products to get inspired. I noticed the other day that the local airline is changing their approach in marketing: Turkish Airlines (THY) is definitely working hard to expand and attract passengers, becoming very…

It's about time!!

Hello All!!!

I have not had a moment to add anything to this blog until now. I am anxious to network and get to know all of you. Also to visit each of your blogs.

I am currently working on two fiction projects, both with religious themes, although, they are probably not parallel to traditonal Christian fiction. I tend to have a wild imagination. I like to call my work " Christian Thrillers ". I do, however, endeavor to stay true to scripture and my faith.

I also write…

How To Market Fiction Novels When Everybody Pays Attention to Non-Fiction

I read a lot on the internet about book marketing. And I'm game to try anything that makes sense. So I was reading something lately that said to pull out little bits from the fiction to sell it. Fiction is really hard to promote through non-traditional channels but dealing with the reality of how good a sale on your website is versus one that has gone through many hands, well...a person has to keep at it.

So as some of you know, I am promoting others novels. We are a publishing…

Feeding The Pipeline

My sister, who is a realtor, often makes the comment: "I need to feed the pipeline." This is how she looks at her business - she puts something in - then something comes out. She "feeds" this pipeline with her marketing, and what comes from that is her business and income. "If you don't put it in, it's not going to come out," she reminds me.

Well, for the past two months I have not fed my pipeline - and it's showing! I'm not being hard on myself though, the reason for it is…

The Promise

Jack Cole's left hand held a tight grip on the front of the man's shirt. In Cole's right hand was a Glock 45 Automatic, the hammer pulled back.

"You're about as smart as a bag of wet hair," Cole hissed.

"Nobody told me you had a book out," the man answered, his voice quivering slightly.

"You went and bought somebody else's book. Why is that?" Cole asked, his voice still reflecting his anger.

The man winced, fully expecting to hear the hammer drop.

"You…

Do cities have personalities ..... and can you have a relationship with them?

Famous Turkish author Buket Uzuner would give this question a resounding YES. She once wrote an essay entitled "My soul-mate İstanbul, ex-husband Paris and lover New York."

This emotional relationship with the city is encapsulated in "İstanbul Blues", the subject of my Turkish book review this week:

Eavesdropping at Denny's

Today I was writing at my new haunt--the Denny's on 50th St and 25th Ave. My usual writing place--the Cappuccino Affair--may be sold soon and the owner has kind of lost interest, which means that the menu has dwindled to next to nothing and sometimes he isn't even open. Since I like to write for 6+ hours, I need a place where I have a few things to choose from for lunch or supper.

A few weeks ago, I went into Denny's Restaurant and spoke with the…

Ideas from This Group That Worked

I have marketed to libraries through email and fax before. But not a whole lot came of it, though I did get orders through library distributors. The first time I received a purchase order and I was a bit stupified and phoned them right away to ask what it was. It looked odd because it didn't have prices. This was on the first book we had ever published so that was great but still, I asked if I had to give a discount. They said no. They mark up the books they buy for libraries. So ever since…
